Five Typical Muscle Building Mistakes

Have you been trying to build muscle mass with limited success? Can't seem to build muscle mass no matter how hard you strive? Are these typical muscle building mistakes stopping you moving forward?

Here are the five typical muscle building mistakes:

  1. High volume muscle building workout routines
    Think doing considerably more exercises will help you develop muscle? Think again! Believe me "less is more". If you're battling to build muscle, do yourself a favor and reduce the amount of repetitions you're doing for every exercise for a couple of weeks. My guess is you will begin to build muscle. Very few develop muscle on high repetition workouts.
  2. Not eating a sufficient amount of food, stalls muscle building
    This is probably the most common mistake. Men trying to build muscle complain that they are doing workout following workout but still can't build muscle. If your muscle building workout is correct, then the answer is simple: look at your diet. Food is the raw material that is consumed to construct muscle so if you're muscle mass building is lagging, it is a result of your not eating an adequate amount of the right foods. Begin eating more and do not stop until you begin to build muscle. Many people have to consume a lot more calories than they think to develop muscle mass.
  3. Too much cardiovascular can hinder your muscles building
    Another problem for some is cardiovascular. The skinny man figures that he will keep fat gains at a minimum if he tosses in 3-4 cardio periods a week. If you're a thin guy trying to develop muscle, you don't genuinely have much body fat to lose. Only worry about cardiovascular if you're really starting to put on fat because it's just going to hinder your ability to recover from your muscle building workouts. If you must do some cardiovascular, do 2-3 sessions involving low impact cardiovascular. This should keep your heart healthy and will not sacrifice your ability to develop muscle.
  4. High level of stress will affect your muscles building
    Stress isn't just nasty to deal with, but it is also going to make your muscles building harder. Whenever your body is under extreme stress, it will likely be secreting a hormone referred to as cortisol into your body. The task of cortisol is to break tissues down. If you body is making excessive amounts of cortisol, it's hard to start developing tissue (which is the aim of muscle building). If you're a higher stress person your own body is hindering the muscle building effort. To deal with stress, develop a deep breathing routine, composing in a journal, or remove some of these triggers from your life.
  5. Supplements do not guarantee muscle building
    Cease your reliance on supplements to construct muscle. Stop clogging your cabinet full of the most recent products aimed at helping you build muscle. Keep in mind that no supplement will build muscle for you. Spend your time on muscle building workouts and not on reading about which supplements are the best for building muscle. If you wish to build muscle, the primary three supplements available are proteins powder, creatine, and fish oil. These three will be all you need, along with proper muscle building exercises, to gain muscle mass.

Keep these points in mind as you develop your muscles building program. Make changes if you are not seeing results. Muscle mass building doesn't happen without overnight.

One of the quickest and easiest exercises bodybuilding is leg squat. You do not need any installation in the first place (although you can build up to using weights in the shoulders or hands).

And yet, may be a more effective exercises that can be used to maintain muscle tone and build definition quite well in all leg muscles.

In its simplest form, you'd be surprised at the time that you can fit leg exercises squat exercise in. It is a muscle that is making it possible to while something else, like being in a phone call, or watch the kitchen while you are cooking a meal.

Thus, leg squat, how is the best way to do it?

How's comfortable and well equipped to squat legs is easy, here's how: -

  1. Stand with your legs comfortably apart, usually shoulder width is the most natural and easy, and shake a bit to yourself to make sure you is loose enough.
  2. Take a dozen or so deep breaths, focusing your breath in the abdomen, instead of in the chest.
  3. Relax and focus gently on your body and how you feel about the exercise of muscle that are about to undertake.
  4. From the leg squatting Slowly lower down, bending your knees slightly to a point where you feel comfortable. Remember to breathe at the stage when it goes down.
  5. Keep position for a few seconds in the lowest point (this is a really vital point in the whole leg squat) and then gradually over again, rise to standing. This time is important to breathe in as you raise it.

How easy is that? However, when you do a leg squat few repetitions, especially if you are fairly new to this, we really will find your muscles tightening and benefits will be obvious!

How many representatives? Well, that's up to you. Home so small that you will not hurt and be intimidated, as it gains increasing power. Every day you make your leg squats, you can gradually increase the number - is an exercise weights more demanding than you think.

In fact, when you are starting out, squats legs are one of the best exercises you can do for your legs. Later, just add some small weights in your hands and even when they are actually making exercise, an advanced weight training exercise is to have a greater weight on your shoulders too!

And did I say that squats are one of the legs bodybuilding exercises you can do almost anywhere, even in your office or home!

The 5 Rs Principle can help beginning exercisers figure out what exactly goes into an effective workout. Each `R' focuses on an important element of an exercise routine that forces the beginner to look at their workouts in a holistic fashion.

  1. RANGE of motion
    Range of motion refers to how the capability of a joint to move through a prescribed set of movements. In order for a beginner to see results, each exercise should be performed from a fully stretched position of the muscle to a fully contracted position. An example: I see a lot of beginners (and people who have been around the gym long enough to know better) load up the EZ-curl bar for preacher curls and perform the exercise only lowering the bar halfway down on the eccentric portion of the exercise. Not only can this cause injury to the bicep muscle, it also doesn't work the muscle the best way possible and limits the results of the exercise.

    You'll hear the term `range of motion' often in reference to joint health and mobility. This is no exception in the gym. Your joints are supported by large and small muscles. In order to optimize your joint health, all the muscles surrounding the joints must be worked as well.

  2. RESISTANCE
    When you're just starting to lift weights, how much weight to use is a huge issue. It's unfortunate that many personal trainers will tell women to use a lighter weight so that they will "tone up" and not get bulky. This is probably the biggest myth in all of weight lifting? women who lift heavy weights will not get bulky. Don't believe anyone who tells you this! Choose a weight that allows you to complete the exercise without sacrificing proper form but that is heavy enough that you cannot possibly perform another repetition at the end of your prescribed set of repetitions.
  3. REPETITIONS
    Another huge variable for beginning exercisers is how many repetitions to perform. Performing certain repetitions will indeed produce highly specific results. In general, low repetitions (3-8) produce greater absolute strength, medium repetitions (10-20) produce anaerobic strength endurance, and high repetitions (20-40) produce aerobic strength endurance.

    Now, an ideal beginner routine will probably include sets of medium repetitions, just to allow the exerciser to learn to perform the exercise correctly, with proper form and technique and to allow her to experiment with experiencing muscle fatigue at 12-15 repetitions. As she progresses, she can experiment with different set/rep schemes customized to individual goals.

    An important note is that in order to achieve the results desired from performing a certain number of repetitions is that muscular failure must be achieved within the repetition ranges above. Muscular failure means that you can't possibly push out one more repetition no matter how hard you're trying to do it.

  4. REST
    In general, your body needs between two to four minutes of rest between sets to prepare itself to perform another set at maximum capacity. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and phosphocreatine (PC) are used by your muscle cells to contract during a weight lifting exercise. Your body needs time to regenerate these two compounds before it is ready to go again.

    Unless you're trying to develop all-out absolute strength by performing low repetitions with very heavy weight, you're probably not going to need to wait that long between sets. Most beginners will be working within a medium repetition range and therefore do not need to wait that long between sets. One to two minutes is fine.

  5. RECOVERY
    You will not see faster or better results by working the same muscle groups day after day. As important as hard work is, recovery between workouts is even more important. Beginners should work the same muscle groups no more than two times per week, with at least forty-eight hours break between sessions. As an exerciser becomes more advanced, she will probably cut back to working each muscle group once every seven days or so.

If you've never heard of the transversus abdominis I am not surprised. It is the deepest of the four anterior abdominal muscles and so you can not see. It lies beneath the rectus abdominis (the muscle that forms the package of 6) and external and internal oblique muscles.

As its name implies, runs through the abdomen. Often referred to as the internal weight belt or natural girdle because their only job is to prepare your lower back and pull your navel like a girdle.

Why the transverse abdominal goes so important?

A group of physiotherapists in Australia, studied looking back pain the patterns of muscle coordination. They wanted to see if there was a difference between people who have no lower back pain and people with chronic low back pain. What they found is that when healthy people without back pain moving your arms or legs of the transverse abdominal muscle is the first shot.

There are plenty of stomach exercises on for those who want to shape their core and strengthen their Section average. This can be both a blessing and a curse. It is easy to find plenty of exercises and routines that work the midsection, but how do you know which are good? Well, here is what appears to be some of the best around, according to the recommendations of fitness experts. If you want to work in your stomach, but not sure where to start, then this team all-star "can be a good starting point would be. As with any workout routine, be sure to consult a professional before beginning and always warm up properly to avoid injury.

Crunchless Crunch
are regular crunches ideal for working the rectus abdominis muscles (the front of your stomach), but do little for the transverse abdominal muscles deeper in the section half, plus they tend to put strain on your back and neck. This first exercise corrects that, working the transverse muscles with no back or neck strain. In essence, it is trying to pull the navel in towards the spine. This can be tricky, since it involves the use of muscles that can not be used to activate. To start, either lie or face down or kneeling. You may want to try both ways and see which helps you feel the best exercise. Relax your body as trying as possible, use only the lower abdominals to move your navel toward your spine. Hold for ten seconds. If holding for ten seconds feels easy, hold for a longer period. The aim is to maintain the contraction until you feel, or feel your muscles working harder than the transverse abdominus. When you feel this, let the contraction out.

Hip Lift
Staying in the back for this stomach exercise. Place your arms at your sides with palms up on the roof. Put your legs up in the air to the soles of the feet are facing the ceiling and legs make an angle ninety degrees with the trunk. Keep your knees unbent and as straight as possible. Now, your ab muscles contract so that it feels like your belly button is being pulled toward column, while at the same time gently lifting your hips off the floor. Lift your hips up to a few inches, keeping your legs extended straight up. Hold, then slowly lower your hips back on the floor. Repeat for an entire system.

Long Arm Crunch
For this stomach exercise, remain on the floor with knees bent and feet flat. Relax and extend your arms back on the ground as if reaching above his head. Contract your abs and slowly raise arms, head and shoulders off the floor to an angle of thirty degrees. A moment, then slowly lower your shoulders back on the floor. Repeat the procedure for a whole system. Be careful not to lead with your arms, keeping them straight and alongside your head.

Some Other honorable mentions include the vertical restriction of the leg, torso twists, and any Pilates routine that emphasizes the core. Feel free to investigate some of these exercises more than once you have mastered the previous three. Now that you're armed with some of the best stomach exercises, is on its way a trimmer tummy!

When trying to achieve the illusive six pack, it' easy to get confused by all the "best ab workouts" available. You'll likely notice that there a multitude of ab workouts to choose one, so deciphering which ones will work the best can be tricky.

The thing to remember is that whenever you are trying to work your core, everything works, for a certain period of time. Everything from high reps, low reps, weighted work, bodyweight work, stability ball exercises, and BOSU ball exercises - it all works until your body adapts and says, "This is easy, I'm not going to change unless you give me a new reason to adapt."

Your ab training should be progressed from stable floor work with your body weight to a unstable surface with weighted work. Progressing to movements that will reduce your base of support as much as possible are the best ab workouts because they will call into play all the muscles within the core, especially those really deep that stable floor work can not target.

Such examples of floor ab exercises that would do this would be crunches, sit ups and leg raises. Eventually you want to do these same exercises against gravity, then a load and then on unstable surface like a stability ball. Body weight exercises like "front planks" and "side planks" should be the foundation of a core program and progressed to one arm planks in the frontal and side planes and then eventually on a stability ball or BOSU ball for further recruitment.

The best ab workouts to make your abs "pop" would be a variety of weighted movements. I'm sure you've skinny guys with a flat stomach but no "eye popping" abs, which is because they have not developed the actual abdominal muscle, just like every other body part. Part of getting nicely chiseled abs is going to be developing the muscles underneath the fat, and weighted ab crunches with cables or on a stability ball with a heavy dumbbell will do this best.

During all your ab workouts be sure to get a full stretch during the eccentric phase of your ab exercises. Going through an entire range of motion on the way up (if doing a crunch on the floor or ball) is not necessary, however, you should be "crunching" your upper abs onto your lower abs during each rep to maximize the burn, recruitment and full development.

The one weighted exercise you will not find in my programs is weighted side bends, as this could make you look wider in the waste, distracting from creating a lean image.

One concerning question most people have is regarding lower ab workouts, typically the most troubling spot. Yes, hip flexion (emphasis more so on lower abs) is important to perform and should be done first in the workout but the reality of the matter is that you cannot specifically separate your abs into upper and lower components. Whenever you perform any type of ab movement you should automatically be focusing on working both the upper and lower portion at the same time.

Good exercise to definitely direct a little more force into the lower area would be the progression of lying leg raises, lying leg raises on a incline and eventually hanging leg raises fully vertical. Lying leg raises on a stability pull is also an extremely challenging and advanced exercise to create razor sharp abdominals.

Finally, the last thing to consider is when you are going to perform your ab workout is training frequency. Again, generally speaking, the more the better assuming your abdominals have recovered. Whether you want to perform it at the end of your workout, before your workout, during your workout or on a day of it's own is up to you. My ab workouts incorporate all methods depending on if you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced. Some theories of that warn you not to start with abs is because abs work as a synergistic muscle for so many of the other exercises you'll do, if you pre-fatigue them before the start of the workout, you may not progress as much during the rest of your workout. I don't agree with this and if you're abs are your weakest link then they should be given first priority when you are the most fresh, the start of your workout.

Incorporating a specific ab workout is only a small part of the battle - diet, lifestyle and overall caloric expenditure through weight training and cardio are the true building blocks to creating a sexy and desired mid section.

Chest exercises are a great way to tone both the upper body and increase strength. There are all types of chest exercises you can do both inside and outside the gym - some can do without equipment and have equipment to give maximum benefit.

It's good advice - if you have not already done so - to invest in an exercise ball, a mat workout, and if your budget allows a pair of dumbbells. This will make some of the exercises more comfortable, give you some diversity and allow you to get the maximum benefit for very little cash outlay!

And of course you can use fitness equipment for all types of training and others.

  1. Pectoralis
    Push ups are great exercise as a whole working around the body - but the greatest benefits will be seen in the chest and arms. For the most effective pushup keep their hands off shoulder level. Bend your arms and down as far as possible, before straightening the arms and pushing up again.
  2. Bench Press
    A pair of dumbbells will provide excellent additional benefits of an exercise bench press. Lie on the bench (or in this case, exercise ball) and hold the dumbbells up and bend arms and lower the dumbbells to just below your chest.
  3. Incline / Decline Bench Press
    This exercise is the same as a regular bench press except you will be doing in a bank that is in a good or a prone position decreased. Again, the exercise ball provides a and excellent cost effective replacement for a bank.
  4. Chest Flies
    Chest flies can be done in a bank - or for a different approach in an exercise ball. Lie on the bank (or the balance of the shoulders / back on the ball) and keep some dumbbells up with both hands before falling to the side.
  5. Chest Press with a resistance band
    Attach the band behind you and then hold and pull the handles until the correct voltage. Move your arms out sideways and then back.
  6. Dips
    You will need some kind of parallel bars for dips. Take hold of the bar (palms facing each other) and straighten your arms while bending knees. Lean your body slightly forward and push up and down on the bars. The chest in this exercise emphasizes the amount of forward tilt you do.
  7. Chest Stretch
    This section is fully compatible with a resistance band. Sit on the floor in a cross-legged position and maintain the band on the head with your hands. Pull your arms and lower them slowly. Let the resistance band expand or contract when the band goes over your head and behind back ... Then reverse the movement in the opposite direction
  8. Pectoral with resistance tube
    This exercise works almost the same as regular push-ups but we will use resistance tubing / band to make things more difficult. Slide the cuff on the upper back and cling to ends, then iron as usual.
  9. Pectoral with a medicine ball
    These bending using a medicine ball to give a variant of standard push-ups. First, put a hand on the ball and the other on the floor and assume the position plate. As pushup here also can pass the ball along the ground to the other party will also work on the abdominals.
  10. Tighten the chest
    Sit in a chair or on an exercise ball and grab a medicine ball. Keep your back straight and hold the medicine ball at chest level. Pressing the ball will feel your chest contract. Keep pushing the ball and slowly rotate to one side slowly pushing out the ball on the fly. Go back to the center and repeat for the other side.

One of the most important information on how to gain muscle mass that people have to understand is this: muscles grow naturally after strenuous activities take place. Now, if your day to day activities does not really provide stress to your muscles, how can you build lean muscle?

Here are a few muscle building techniques:

  1. Come up with a program or a workout plan you intend to follow.

    In order to build lean muscle, you need not exercise everyday. However, you need to be able to perform your routines regularly e.g. every Mondays and Wednesdays, Every Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and the likes. Regularly exercising means creating a schedule of exercises, and which workout routines you plan to perform on specific days.

    Take note, however, that it is important to give your muscles at least a day of rest before exercising once more. For example, if you performed muscle curling exercises last Monday which targeted your arms, it is best that you repeat those routines on Wednesday, and refrain from doing that routine type the day after Monday to be able to let your arm muscles rest.

    Remember that resting your muscles also forms part of muscle building techniques because of the fact that the muscle growing process actually happens when your muscles are at rest -- this is different from what many people believe in: they believe that the muscle development process actually occurs while they perform the workouts, which is not true.

  2. See to it that you perform properly each and every routine in your muscle gaining program.

    Another pointer that is necessary if you want to really learn how to gain muscle mass is to perform your exercises correctly. When working out, you have to exhibit proper posture, proper stretching, and so on, not only so you can successfully build lean muscle, but also to reduce the probability of getting injured. It is a good move to practice the routines first with light weights, then, once you master those moves, you can proceed to using heavier weights. If you are unsure of how to do the exercises correctly, do not be afraid to ask a gym trainer, or any friend who is a seasoned weight lifter.

  3. Make changes to your diet as needed.

    Among the muscle building techniques that help build lean muscle is eating healthy. Aside from increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables, it is also recommended that you also increase your intake of meals with protein, carbohydrates, etc. Remember that protein and carbohydrates are nutrients that help develop body muscles as well as helps in their repair, so it is a must to eat foods with the said nutrients, especially if you are following a muscle gaining program.

Following muscle building techniques will increase your muscle mass and give you a body that's sure to be admired by many.
