Let me clear my bias. I'm a free weight. The question has never been one to use free weights or not. On occasion, however, I tossed around in my mind whether working at home can not be more beneficial.
This all said, there is nothing like a pair of dumbbells weigh 110 pounds gut wrenching six repetitions of the incline bench (for me was great for you, it might be a heating weight). I loved the adrenaline of getting below 365 pounds bar for the scariest set of squats at a time (other time for me). There is nothing so trying at home.
I have an iron gym pull-up that I love. For the moment, my work out program It consists of running a mountain road about 3 ½ miles, and then do push-ups and push-ups for my upper body work. It's good exercise, but 49 with two smaller ones, could return to the days my muscles? I have to figure out, that's all.
From my home gym options (because going to the gym is not an option - spouses do), the gossip all-in-one with the weight stack and the switch on the back was out immediately. I hate those things. The resistance feels bad, zero range motion, locked joints dangerous positions, and could remain. And the great systems of power rack / smith machine free weights can not be do. I'd love to have one but too big and too expensive.
The toy I really want is, of course, the Bowflex. I used that a while ago back in the house of a friend and I really enjoyed. My wallet hates it, as the configuration I want is in the range of $2000, ouch. Still, with its easy payment, friendly neighborhood plan is a feasible option. Instead they settled in Bodylastics.
For the next twelve weeks, I'll put the baby to the test. I move that could replicate only in the gym. I'll see if this cheap (it's cheap, is not "cheap" is not "accessible", it's cheap) "gym at home can support what I am going to (being the 49-year-old father of two middle-aged, however, "Superdad" in my own mind!).
